Stolen Boards

  • by

Hi Folks,

I have had 2 boards stolen from my house in Boambee just south of Coffs Harbour, nothing else was touched or taken so the thieves were extremely well prepared and knew exactly what they wanted and where they were. Please see the photo attached, the first of the two boards is the Barry Bennett which is quite a stand out board it won the show and shine at the Golden Sands Hotel many years ago during the 6o’s Surf Rally’s the Loggerheads held.

Its quite distinct as it has a large BB sticker from what I have been told very few Barry Bennett boards were made with the such big stickers. It has some light scratches under the nose that were repaired with clear glass and still visible,  the black writing around the sticker is the Bennett factory address in Sydney, on the tail of the deck  there is  2 circular repairs about 40 to 50 mm in diameter where I removed the twin leg rope plugs and glass them over, the stringer is ½”. The fin is quite broad at the base and has a shape of its own , please take note of this in the photo. Otherwise this board would be described as show room condition..! and it surfs beautifully..!

The white board in the photo has fat rails and was undergoing a very slow restoration,  most of the glass was sanded off there was some minor repairs to be carried out and it was soon to be reglassed, the VERY large ‘D’ fin is very noticeable and quite characteristic. Both are approx. 9’ 4” long.

These boards have been in my possession for the best part of 40 years and, as you will understand both are quite treasured, to give you an indication the Barry Bennett is listed in my will to go to my first born son who is now 11 years old. I am asked you to please keep an eye out for them, especially the Barry Bennett as it is unique and it is very easily identified. Obviously for the reasons above I would like the boards back however I am as equally focused on seeing the thieves brought to justice.

I believe these boards will turn up as they are of interest to a very select group of  old mal surfers, however what I feel I have on my side is knowing that the guys who ride old mals all have a strong sense of pride and respect.

Please keep an eye out for them at the national titles in September, the Police have registered the theft and if you have any information please contact the Police on 131444 the event # is E52437948 or contact me on my mobile 0418 677 473 or email mick@subee.com.au

Information leading to the recovery  will be rewarded..! please forward this email to anyone and everyone you know within the surfing fraternity.

Yours in Surfing
